Sue was responsible for leading and embedding Unilever’s ambitious USLP (the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan) into the business and ensuring progress against its 70+ time bound targets. She was also responsible for teams in 180 markets who engage with Governments and key external stakeholders; lead employee engagement; handle the media; and are accountable for issues and crisis management.
During her tenure at Unilever, Sue was responsible for establishing sustainability as a driver of brand growth in the top 40 brands that represent some 80% of Unilever’s turnover. By the end of 2017, over 25 of its brands were Purpose-led, growing 50% faster than its other brands and representing 70% of the company’s growth.
She is now an advisor on sustainability strategy for companies wishing to step change their strategy and commitment to sustainability. She also sits on the Advisory Board of Fonterra, the big cattle and dairy co-operative in New Zealand. Sue's current and recent clients include Mars; Primark; Lloyds Bank; Nat West Banking Group; Coutts; Natura; Danone; RHS; Heineken; and O2. Both Primark and the RHS launched ambitious sustainability plans in September 2021 based on work led by Sue.
Sue is the Chair of the independent not for profit organisation, Blueprint for Better Business. She is on the Board of the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit, is a Fellow at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, tutoring regularly on their senior executive education programmes. She is a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield School of Business Management, and a Fellow of the RSA. In November 2020 Forbes magazine placed Sue 13th in a list of the top 100 women sustainability influencers worldwide.
